iDEW Dual Credit Students Present Final Projects

Indianapolis was recently recognized on Forbes' list of "Cities Creating the Most Tech Jobs in 2017."

The IUPUI School of Informatics & Computing is hoping to capitalize on this boom in the city's tech sector with the iDEW program.

iDEW stands for Informatics Diversity-Enhanced Workforce, and addresses local and national IT workforce needs through community partnerships, attracting diverse high school students to informatics subjects with interesting, innovative, and engaging programs, mentorship support, and development of skills and knowledge.

Now in it's third year at Providence Cristo Rey High School, the iDEW class is one of the most popular dual credit classes at the school.

This semester, students learned about the "Internet of Things," and learned to code programs to power smart devices that could benefit their school.

The top three projects were recognized at the presentation night:

First Place: BusPlus+, a bus tracking app (Katsumy Contreras, Isabel Lopez, Georgia Rustin)

Second Place: SelfTrack, an automatic class attendance tracker (Taniah Hamilton, Cesar Mares, Miguel Olivares) Thrid Place: CMC, Inc, a fingerprint-powered lunch check-in app (Hollic Coe, Jordan Criner, Yoselin Martinez)
