Colts Player Surprises PCR Families with Christmas Shopping Spree
Indianapolis Colts' Wide Receiver Donte Moncrief surprised sixty Providence Cristo Rey High School students with a shopping spree at DICK'S Sporting Goods.
The shopping spree was organized through Donte Moncrief's GameChanger Foundation. The foundation looks to provide children from financially disadvantaged families with the resources they need to change the game.
The sixty students had no idea that they were about to get an early Christmas gift. On Friday afternoon, the entire school was called into an assembly.
Vice Principal Leslie Napora explained that, thanks to generous donors, all students would be receiving a gift. Some, however, would be receiving a special Christmas experience. The sixty names were called and the students met up with their parents, who had been asked to arrive for a field trip. Staff had kept the trip location and details a secret from them as well.
"I thought we might go look at Christmas lights or go see a movie," said Jennifer Castellanos, mother of sophomore Jessica. "I was not expecting this!"
Once they arrived, they learned that not only would they get a $125 DICK's gift card, but Donte Moncrief would be helping them shop as well.
"I thought it was incredibly thoughtful of him to spend time with the kids. He didn't have to do that. He really made our day," said one mother of a PCR senior.
All sixty students were able to meet Moncrief and get an autographed Colts football, along with other Colts swag.
"Where I'm from, everything is about family," said Moncrief. "Christmas is big. I know that being able to do this for them is huge."
Many students thought about their loved ones when shopping. "I'm making sure I have enough to get my mom a present too," said senior Krishae Wilson.
At the end of the shopping experience, the students held up their favorite items for a photo with Moncrief. New jackets, cleats, backpacks, pants, and more were proudly displayed, and sixty happy families headed home.
Providence Cristo Rey High School wishes to thank Donte Moncrief, the staff of Donte Moncrief's GameChanger Foundation, and the staff of DICK'S Sporting Goods at The Shops at Perry Crossing for making this incredible gift possible for our students.
We would also like to thank the organizations & individual donors who contributed to make sure all of our students received a gift or holiday assistance this year.
