January Message from Dr. Crooks

Catholic Schools Week 2018

Greetings from Providence Cristo Rey where we are celebrating Catholic Schools Week!

As we take time to join in the mission and successes of Catholic Schools throughout the United States, we as a school are focusing on the virtue of knowledge. This virtue appropriately summarizes the theme for Catholic Schools Week: Learn, Serve, Lead, Succeed.

The Cristo Rey Network uses the tagline: Transforming Urban America One Student at a Time. One of the key ways that we are transforming is through knowledge.

At Providence Cristo Rey we use and impart knowledge in three ways.

First, as a college preparatory school, we use and impart knowledge to help our students prepare for Higher Education. We seek to provide them with the means to achieve their goals and dreams. Through what they learn in the classroom and at our Corporate work sites, we seek to lay a strong foundation that allows them to successfully pursue the career that they desire. We want to give them the tools to determine their own destiny in a positive way. We want them to succeed.

Second, we use and impart knowledge to help them to know the great love God has for them. In knowing God’s love for them, they will come to understand that no matter what life may throw their way, they are not alone. God is with them. He desires to guide them, and lead them to a deep and strong relationship with Him.

Finally, we use and impart knowledge to combine the first two areas, academics and faith, to help them realize and become the person that God has created them to be. He has created them to be a person who not only has gifts and talents, but also one who is called to share those gifts and talents with others. They are called, and are able, to transform society in a positive way. In allowing God to lead them, they can in turn lead and serve others.

Our students are using the gifts of knowledge that they receive at Providence Cristo Rey to become amazing young men and women. As is noted in our stories this month (check them out below!), given a chance, our kids are excelling in a positive way. They are succeeding! We would not be able to do this without your continued support.

Thank you as you continue to help us transform Urban America, one student at a time!

With Joy & Gratitude,

Dr. Margie Crooks

Stories from our January e-newsletter (click here to subscribe!)

The Providence Cristo Rey High School DECA club had an excellent competition performance at the 2018 DECA District 8 Career Development Conference.

DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.

Three Providence Cristo Rey students placed first in their event categories and three more placed high enough to move onto the state competition in March.

Providence Cristo Rey is proud to have partnerships with two Catholic teaching programs run by the University of Notre Dame, ECHO Teaching Theology and the Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE).

We spoke with our newest ACE Teaching Fellow and English teacher, Allie Griffith (pictured third from left), about why she chose to begin her career in Catholic education.

All Providence Cristo Rey freshman must take a Personal Finance course. Students gain basic personal finance knowledge, such as how credit cards work, how to budget, investing for retirement, and paying for college.

Read more about their semester-long financial simulation, Show Me The Money!, which shows them how their daily choices affect their future financial outcomes.
